Holiday rentals in Paternoster: a guide to self-catering stays

· 4 min read

Paternoster is a small fishing village on the Cape West Coast, about two hours from Cape Town. Its white cottages and wide beaches make it one of the best-loved holiday spots in the Western Cape.

What Paternoster is like

The village is quiet and walkable. Days are for the beach, the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve and the lighthouse, and evenings for fresh seafood. Most holiday homes are self-catering cottages, from a studio for two to big family houses.

When to go

Summer (December to March) is busiest and needs booking early. Spring (August to October) brings the West Coast flowers nearby and calmer prices. Winter is quiet, with fires inside and storms over the sea, and some hosts offer weekly specials.

What to look for in a rental

  • Walking distance to the beach, or a sea view if that matters to you.
  • A braai area and an outdoor space out of the wind.
  • Enough beds for everyone, not only sleeper couches.
  • Backup power or a gas stove for load-shedding.
  • Clear house rules on pets, parking and check-in times.
